Mary’s Maple Porter

April 10, 2012

This is not Mary's Maple Porter.

This is not Mary’s Maple Porter.

Brewed by: The Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Style: Maple porter

ABV: 6.9

4.5 out of 5 burps

The bastards already claimed my too-soon-empty glass, so this condiment photo will have to do for illustration.

But truth be told, it was the beer’s fault for disappearing so quickly.

It was an existential delight. Perfect for a day when you’ve lost your way, have no purpose, would have preferred to sleep it off. “It” being life or whatever else is ailing you at the moment.

You take the first sip. Maybe it sucks? But it definitely sucks less than life did the previous moment. And that’s not excluding the possibility that life isn’t even sucking per se, just that it did indeed get better from the sip in and of itself. So the criterionless sipping scenario we’re defining here is that life sucks less in the post-sip moment than it did in the pre-sip state.

The next sip defines the state of things for you a bit more and even suggests purpose: Yes, things (whatever they may be for you) will get better, and “getting better” might only entail getting to the bottom of this pint and speedily ordering the next.

And who knows what the next pint might be or not be. Or if we’ll even make it that far.

A toast to the raising of the wrist. Carpe burp.
