Kissmeyer Denied Entry Ale

September 17, 2012

Brewed in: Ipswich Ale Brewery, Charlottenlund, Denmark

ABV: 6.5

Style: Brown ale

1.5 out of 5 burps

Such beautiful caramel color. Looks are good for show. So this would be a good choice in a pinch for a date to a wedding or a high school reunion.

But don’t take it home to see the folks. Things will just get awkward.

You get the parents involved, it’ll start thinking you’re serious. And while you were serious when you ordered it, after a few sips you’re wishing the pint would be over already, without anything humiliating happening. So you smile and nod politely.

But then you panic when you realize the bartender might take your nod to mean you want another one, which you really, really don’t. And a beer that sees you order it two pints in a row, well, there’s no nice way of backing out of that sign of commitment.

Your beer gut can tell you how clingy these things are.

Plus, all your friends would’ve seen you with both pints, so they’re spreading stories about how you love Denied Entry. And based on all the sitcoms you’re likely to see, no one ever listens to the protestations of the protagonist. And no one else will be drinking from that keg, out of respect for your relationship, and the next time you visit the bar, the johnny-on-the-spot bartender makes sure your favorite pint is waiting for you. So, yeah, it turns into this whole long-term relationship. Just messier and messier the more you sidestep the issue.

Moral: Don’t go there. Be up-front and honest in the first place so you and Denied Entry can both go your civil ways living long, happy, independent lives.

My main beef: I’m just not a fan of clove. I’m even deciding to downgrade my original 2.0 rating. It gets worse with every sip, which is unusual. That’s counter to every other beer I’ve ever met. Weird.

Tasted at: Twenty Tap, 54th and College, Indianapolis, Ind.
