2011 book-reading pleasures

Dear Book Bags,

It might be only August, but it’s time to start collecting ideas for our 2011 list. You can vote through the link you received by e-mail — and you can do so multiple times. Or, submit your numerous recommendations here.

Go to that link and scroll down for a preview of what’s already been recommended. You can submit suggestions only through the form, not directly into the spreadsheet.

Keep sending submissions until the end of October (official date TBD), then we’ll set up a voting system like last year and let you know when to cast your votes for the final list.

By the way, if you’re wondering what the next book on this year’s list is, check it out here.

Happy reading!

Li’l T plays shoes

I kinda screwed up holding the camera sideways, so the sound is off after mostly fixing that. Oh, well. But the point is, here is some recent Taylor footage. She knocks my socks off.

L’art furieux avec Spongebob et Dora

Spongebob is his usual self-assured calm as he inspires Taylor's frenetic creative spark.

On this particular babysitting venture, Taylor was nice enough not to be offended when I showed up wearing the same outfit: blue insulated shirt, tan cargo pants and a ponytail.

This might be an elephant hiding in the forest. Or perhaps a portrait of Aunt Leigh.

For dinner, we're having Dora and Boots. Please color in your toppings of choice.

Last month I received my first two masterpieces from my niece. They were, of course, the most delightful things I’ve ever seen since my own masterworks at 20 months old. The even better part was seeing her in the act of creation.

Setting the paper down just so. Getting the crayon into position — eyes all focused concentration. Then the sweeping blur of that right arm executing a creative vision that I hope doesn’t indicate an early need for glasses, but more of an abstract mind making toddler sense of the crazy amount of stimuli it’s absorbing.

The bit that concerned me was one of the pages she was coloring in. Why are we having raw Dora the Explorer for dinner? And why is Dora so happy about it?
